Why National Infertility Awareness Week Matters — And Why Your Voice Matters to Us
If you’re facing infertility right now, we want you to know something important: you are not alone. At RESOLVE, we are a community of people who know this path—its heartbreak, its frustration, its hope, and its resilience. National Infertility Awareness Week® (NIAW), founded by RESOLVE in 1989, exists because your story, your experience, and your voice deserve to be seen, heard, and supported.
Every April, people across the country—patients, partners, providers, advocates, and allies—come together for NIAW to change the conversation around infertility and push for better access to all family building options. And while NIAW is a national movement, at its heart it is personal. It’s about you.
You’re Part of a Much Larger Community Than You Realize
Infertility impacts 1 in 6 people worldwide, yet too many still experience it in isolation.
Maybe you’ve felt misunderstood. Maybe you’ve felt judged. Maybe you’ve felt like no one around you truly knows what you’re going through.
But we do.
NIAW exists to break the silence and push back against the stigma, shame, and outdated myths that often surround infertility. It’s a time when we unite as a community to educate others, correct misinformation, and remind the world that infertility does not discriminate—it can affect anyone, at any age, in any relationship, from any background.
This year, we want to remind you of something deep and true:
You are More Than infertility.
You are more than the test results, the treatments, the waiting, or the disappointment. Infertility is a medical condition, not a personal failure, and you deserve to be seen as a whole human being — not reduced to the hardest part of your journey.
Infertility can quietly take over your identity. It can make you feel defined by appointments, cycles, or setbacks. But the “More Than” theme gently invites you to reclaim the fuller picture of who you are:
- More than a diagnosis. Infertility is something happening to you, not something that defines you.
- More than the pressure to be strong. You’re allowed to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or uncertain — your emotions are valid.
- More than the silence. Sharing your story, even privately, can transform isolation into connection and solidarity.
“More Than” is about rewriting your narrative with honesty and compassion. It’s about recognizing your resilience, honoring your grief, acknowledging your growth, and seeing your worth — all of which exist far beyond infertility.
During NIAW, we come together to help one another remember that truth.
Your Story Is Powerful—And It Can Help Someone Else Feel Less Alone
One of the most meaningful parts of NIAW is the storytelling. Each year, people in our community choose to share their journey—whether publicly or privately—on their own terms. These stories matter because they help others feel seen, validated, and supported. RESOLVE’s initiatives, including the 5Day Challenge and the #WearOrange campaign, bring our community together and help amplify the voices of those living with infertility.
Orange is more than a color during NIAW. It symbolizes courage, visibility, and the simple truth that none of us should have to navigate infertility in the dark.
Your Voice Helps Drive the Change You Deserve
You’ve probably already noticed how complicated and stressful accessing infertility care can be. Insurance coverage, treatment availability, and political debates around reproductive health all impact your path—and these issues don’t fix themselves.
That’s why NIAW is also a time for action.
Your voice—yes, yours—helps lawmakers understand that infertility is a real medical condition requiring real support. Advocacy during NIAW centers the truth that infertility treatment is essential healthcare, not a luxury. And the more people speak out, the more pressure there is to expand access, protect treatment options, and build a more compassionate system for everyone.
Ways You Can Get Involved (In Whatever Way Feels Right for You)
You don’t need to be loud, public, or political to take part in NIAW. You can engage in whatever way honors your emotional bandwidth and personal boundaries.
- Share Your Story—If and When You’re Ready
You can tell it publicly… or privately… or not at all. Every story shared helps dismantle stigma and builds understanding.
- Wear Orange
Join the nationwide #WearOrange tradition that began with RESOLVE in 1989 to show solidarity and raise awareness. Whether you’re posting online or quietly wearing orange to work, you’re part of something bigger.
- Attend or Host an Event
NIAW events—big or small—create space for connection and healing. You can also submit your event to RESOLVE’s official calendar so others can join in.
- Request a Proclamation
Ask your local government to issue a proclamation recognizing NIAW. It’s a powerful way to bring public attention to infertility in your own community.
Why Your Involvement Truly Matters
Every action—your story, your orange shirt, your event, your advocacy—helps build a culture where people facing infertility feel understood and supported. Your participation makes visible what too often remains unseen.
NIAW reminds all of us that:
- Infertility is common—and deserves understanding.
- Community reduces isolation—and you have a community here.
- Advocacy changes policy—and your voice has power.
- Visibility drives compassion, empathy, and progress.
When you get involved—however you choose—you’re not just participating in a movement. You’re helping build hope, awareness, and equitable access for millions of individuals and families. And you’re reminding someone else out there that they too are more than a diagnosis.
And neither are you.
You are more than…
